International
Mesothelioma Program
The International Mesothelioma Program (IMP)
encompasses both a medical program and a research program. Our
clinical focus is on increasing treatment strategies that can
considerably extend the life of our patients. The success of
our new course will be based on the concept of a multidisciplinary
team that includes surgeons, pulmonologists, medical and radiation
oncologists, nurses, radiologists, pathologists, basic and clinical
researchers, and medical and social science professionals.
Mesothelioma International is dedicated to the fight next to
mesothelioma – a worldwide health crisis with line in
humanity's use of asbestos. Mesothelioma is caused by contact
to asbestos, and occurs in those who have breathed in asbestos
fiber, in many cases 20 to 50 or more years ago. Others were
exposed secondarily through family members who without their
knowledge, brought strand home on their work dress or on their
hair or skin. With more than 150 research presentations, the
International Mesothelioma Interest Group conference will be
the biggest scientific gathering on mesothelioma ever held.
Because the disease is often highly developed at the time of
diagnosis, normal survival for those with pleural mesothelioma
- affecting the tissue that line the lungs - is only about one
year.
Its research meeting point is collaborative - to bring together
basic, translational, and clinical researchers who seek to know
how and why the disease develops and to translate those findings
into improved patient care. Its helpful focus involves social
work, pastoral care, and palliative care professionals who work
to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
We also have performed micro array-based study of MPM tissues
and known treatment related prognostic markers. More recently,
we have applied cutting edge proteomic methods in identifying
activated tyrosine kinase proteins in MPM.
This year's conference will include a new session listening
carefully on the improved risk of pleural mesothelioma for people
uncovered to airborne debris from the collapse of the World
Trade Center. It is Mesothelioma International’s goal
to combine the most up to date, concise mesothelioma information
available today, and our resource co-ordinators are always accessible
to help you and your family finds the answers for your particular
questions.
