Mesothelioma
Prognosis
Typically the most essential variable determining the prognosis
and life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is the stage of
the cancer when it is diagnosed. It also can not be said with
faith which of the two types is a worse diagnosis; peritoneal
mesothelioma or pleural mesothelioma. Regularly patients diagnosed
with either peritoneal or pleural mesothelioma are told that
they may have less than a year to live. However, according to
researchers in leading explore centers around the world this
is not necessarily the case.
Worse still, untimely symptoms of mesothelioma are often confused
with other conditions like pneumonia, thus prolonging a mesothelioma
diagnosis . In fact, in one mesothelioma study, doctors writing
about the prognosis of mesothelioma explained that long-standing
mesothelioma survivors do exist and their prognosis may be self-etermining
of the treatment or therapies pursued.Once more distinct symptoms
become evident, the disease has usually progressed to advanced
stages.
In common the prognosis of mesothelioma is poor and most
studies report median survival of less than a year. However,
there are long term mesothelioma survivors (both pleural and
peritoneal survivors) who have survived more than 10 years.
Like other cancers, mesothelioma depends on near the beginning
on diagnosis and treatment for the best prognosis. Unfortunately,
mesothelioma is difficult to detect in its early stages since
symptoms generally take decades to appear.
Mesothelioma Treatments and Therapies
Standard treatment for all but generalized mesothelioma is
normally not healing. Surgery and radiotherapy have a limited
role in highly selected mesothelioma patients and chemotherapy
is the only potential treatment option for the majority of
people diagnosed with mesothelioma. For individual patients,
treatment for mesothelioma depends on the location of the
cancer, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and
general health. Mesotheliomas are very resistant to other
types of treatment. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy may help
to ease some of the symptoms, and may sometimes even help
to control the cancer for a short time but there is no evidence
that they can actually raise life-expectancy and help people
to live longer.
Mesothelioma Prognosis and Survival
If this is true, it would suggest that mesothelioma prognosis
and survival may be more dependent on individual differences
among patients and less dependent upon conventional mesothelioma
treatments. In general the prognosis of mesothelioma is poor
and mainly studies details median survival of less than a
year. However, there are long term mesothelioma survivors
who have survived more than 10 years. In the same study, patients
with sarcomatoid and mixed mesothelioma did not fare as well.
Only 20% of these patients were lively two years later, and
none of them survived five years.
Staging Systems and Mesothelioma Prognosis
Staging gives the doctor a better understanding of how to
treat the disease based on its level of progression and is
perhaps the most important variable used in determining a
patient's mesothelioma prognosis. Generally speaking, patients
who are diagnosed at an advanced stage tend to have a poor
mesothelioma prognosis. Survival rates for such patients usually
don't extend beyond a year after the disease is discovered.
In each of these systems, the mesothelioma prognosis worsens
as the stages of the cancer proceed. There are several not
like kinds of mesothelioma and the viewpoint does vary a little
depending on the type of cancer, where it is, how far it has
spread and the age of the person who is affected.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma
Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accretion
of fluid in the pleura are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and
abdominal pain and enlargement due to a buildup of liquid
in the abdomen. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma
may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities,
anemia, and fever.
Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally
as masses of strong, elastic fibers that can be separated
into thin threads and woven. owever, some studies show that
peritoneal mesothelioma metastasizes at a more rapid pace
and is therefore more deadly. Asbestos has been widely used
in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings,
roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation.
